System for Award Management (Sam.gov) registration is a mandatory first step for any organization looking to access a wide range of government resources and funding opportunities. It is required for apply for any federal funding opportunities, including the Administration for Native Americans.
A UEI number, or Unique Entity Identifier, is a 12-character alphanumeric ID used by the U.S. federal government to identify entities, such as businesses or non-profits, that do business with them. This ID replaced the DUNS number in April 2022 and is obtained for free through the System for Award Management (SAM.gov) website. You need a UEI if you plan to receive federal contracts or financial assistance. The tribe or organization’s Authorized Representative can work with accounting to get this set up.
How to get a UEI number
1. Go to the SAM.gov website: to begin the free UEI process.
2. Log in: to your SAM.gov account.
3. Navigate: to the entities widget and select "Get started" to request a new Unique Entity ID.
4. Provide your legal business name and address: and confirm the details.
5. Enter your entity's start year and state of incorporation .
6. Select "Receive unique entity ID": to get your UEI.
7. If your organization already have a UEI number, make sure your access privileges are up-to-date.
